James Dahl

James Dahl’s unique, wheel thrown pottery is functional stoneware with a timeless quality and beauty. He draws inspiration for his work from nature - specifically the redwood forest around his home and the Pacific Ocean, with its rugged beaches, which are reflected in the pottery’s colors, textures and shapes.

James meticulously handcrafts his pottery of original shapes and designs with unmatched skill. He has formulated his clay and glazes to work in a specially designed oil-fired kiln. The pottery is high-fired in a reduction atmosphere to 2400 degrees F.

James began his study of pottery at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa under the direction of Dean Schwartz, who was a former student of the world renowned master potter, Marguerite Wildenhain. Following college, it was his good fortune to study directly with Wildenhain at Pond Farm Pottery. He further expanded his art education by attending the Atelier Met de Penninghen et J.d’Andon in Paris, France.

In the fall of 1969, he began his career in Berkeley, California by joining the Berkeley Potters’ Guild and renting workshop space in an old warehouse. Two years later, James chose to make his home in Mendocino County, California, just south of Fort Bragg.

Today he is enjoying success in his craft and satisfaction in rearing his three children. The family raises small farm animals, grows fruits, flowers and vegetables, and they very much enjoy their life together in the rural community.

James Dahl’s chosen environment provides him with an abundance of inspiration. In his natural surroundings, replete with never-ending challenges, he creates functional pottery with a matchless quality, yet simple elegance.
