Born in 1947, Stuart Greenberg is a self-taught artist whose creative path began in childhood, inspired by his older brother and the classic TV show Jon Gnagy: Learn to Draw. Dubbed the “class artist” early on, he spent his youth drawing nature scenes, sports figures, and historical icons.

Stuart studied at the University of Illinois and Roosevelt University in the 1960s, where his work was influenced by surrealism and psychedelic art. After a formative year studying graphic design in Paris, he returned to Chicago to work at WTTW-TV before moving to rural southern Illinois in 1970. There, surrounded by nature, he focused on plein air oil landscapes in the Impressionist tradition.

In 1977, Stuart settled in Northern California, where he became a cartoonist, editor, and later a jewelry artist under the mentorship of cloisonné master Dalen Anderson. Alongside his wife Peg, he co-founded “Elementals,” a Fort Bragg gallery showcasing local artists and their handcrafted jewelry.

A decade later, the couple moved to Kauai, Hawaii, where Stuart hand-painted silk garments for designer Mara Friedman and added scrimshaw and traditional Hawaiian jewelry to their line. After nine vibrant years, they returned to California’s Mendocino Coast, where Stuart continues to paint and create. The majority of his recent work consists of portraits, seascapes, landscapes and “mindscapes” in oil on canvas, done realistically/surrealistically.

In 2007, he began showing my work at “The Edgewater Gallery” in Ft. Bragg, Ca. and in 2017, Stuart became a participating artist/member in “The Artist’s Collective in Elk” and continues to show at the collective.
